Hello, I'm 2Dan and I've been trying to learn as much as possible about Flash recently. I'd really like to use the program to animate and make motion graphic effects. I'm going into college soon for Digital Art and Motion Graphics (most likely Full Sail) , but i just couldn't wait and i wanted to be really prepared for class.
I've been reading two books on flash (betcha' you can't guess what one of them is, lol) and video tutorials on the net including a lot from Lynda.com. Yet despite all this, i still feel baffled when i open up Flash, my motivation kinda drains away as soon as i see that white blank screen.
Anyway, this forum looked like a great place to get advice and learn from others, sooooo here i am!

Welcome aboard, looks like you've been posting around, which is good
About the motivation thing. Flash is just a tool, and it's fun learning tools, but you shouldn't let it control your creativity.
I think a good starting off point is following some of the tutorials in Chris' book, do it his way, give it your own personal twist, and then try starting again with your own/new use of the technique with your own character/layout etc. Experimenting and just having fun.
The other solution is to draw some scamps/doodles/sketches on paper to have an idea of what you'd like to approach before getting to your computer, it helps give you a direction to head in before staring at the blank canvas -- I normally like to change the colour of the canvas, say grey or dull blue so you're not staring at white all the time.
You're going to be working hard when you start your course, so you should take it easy now anyway. I think learning is easier if you take it slow and take in stuff one step at a time and play/experiment to master each part. Flash can be so over whelming at first!
I think it's even harder now to learn Flash than when I started, back with Flash 5/MX when there were less features.
